Emil Ranzenhofer designed this Meisterbrieff (Master's Certificate) in 1903. This master craftman's diploma was required of all German artisans before they could open up their own businesses. To obtain a Meister Brieff, the artisan had to perform 3-5 years as a journeyman, undergo structured training, and then pass a master's exam. It was used as a "market-access restriction" device.
